Your current weighted grade
84.375%
80% of the course entered · 20% remaining
67.5 course percentage points ÷ 80% × 100 = 84.375% current average
Required average on remaining work
87.5%To finish with 85%, across the remaining 20% of the course.
(85 − 67.5) ÷ (20 ÷ 100) = 87.5%. If the remaining work is one exam, this is the exam score needed.
| Course component | Contribution |
|---|---|
| Grade 1 (20%) | 18 points |
| Grade 2 (30%) | 25.5 points |
| Grade 3 (30%) | 24 points |

Different weights.
One clear grade.
A weighted grade gives each assignment or category the influence set by your course. A final exam worth 40% affects your result more than a quiz worth 5%, even when both scores are percentages.
Calculate your current weighted average
Multiply each completed score by its course weight divided by 100. Add these contributions, then divide by the fraction of the course entered. This keeps ungraded future work from being silently counted as zero.
Current grade = sum of (score × course weight) ÷ sum of entered course weights
In the example, 90% worth 20%, 85% worth 30%, and 80% worth 30% earn 18 + 25.5 + 24 = 67.5 course percentage points. These entries represent 80% of the course. The current average is 67.5 ÷ 0.80 = 84.375%.
Find the grade needed on remaining work
Subtract the points already earned from your target final percentage, then divide by the remaining fraction of the course. For an 85% target with 20% remaining, you need (85 − 67.5) ÷ 0.20 = 87.5%.
Required remaining average = (target − earned course percentage points) ÷ (remaining weight ÷ 100)
If that remaining 20% is one final exam, 87.5% is the exam score needed. If several assignments remain, it is their combined weighted average.

Categories and individual assignments
When homework is one category worth 25%, calculate your homework category average first and enter it once with a weight of 25%. Do not give every homework assignment the full category weight. Use the grade average calculator to combine equal scores, relative weights, or earned and possible points within a category.
Missing work versus future work
Enter a zero for work that your course has actually graded as zero. Leave ungraded future work out of the list. Weights above 100% in total are rejected because this page treats weights as percentages of one whole course.
Extra credit and course rules
Scores and targets up to 1,000% are accepted for explicit extra credit. A required average above 100% is flagged so you can see when a target needs extra credit. The tool does not decide how your instructor awards bonus marks or converts percentages to letter grades.
Confirm weights, category calculation methods, and rounding with your course documents. You can also compare the weighted approach with Toronto Metropolitan University’s grade calculator guidance.

Good questions.
Straight answers.
Do my course weights have to total 100%?
A complete course totals 100%. Entering less is useful while work remains: this calculator normalizes your current average and uses the remaining weight to solve your target. Totals over 100% are rejected. For arbitrary relative weights, use the grade average calculator instead.
What grade do I need on my final exam?
Enter all completed grades with their course weights. Leave the final exam out and enter your target. If the final is the only remaining work, the required remaining average is your needed exam percentage.
Why is my current average different from points earned?
Your current average describes only the completed portion. Course percentage points describe its contribution to the whole final grade. An 80% score on half the course is an 80% current average and contributes 40 points to the final percentage.
What if the required grade is more than 100%?
Ordinary full marks would not reach the target under the entered weights. The result shows the actual required percentage and flags that extra credit or different grading rules would be needed.
Can I calculate a final grade with all work completed?
Yes. Once entered weights total 100%, the result is your final weighted percentage. There is no remaining grade to solve for, and the tool tells you whether the target is met.
Are my grades uploaded or saved?
No. Calculations happen in this tab. Your entries are not uploaded or saved to website storage. Reloading restores the example.
