Latest lap first. Up to 200 laps. Reset clears the time and laps.
No account. No sound. Timing stays in this tab.
Ready.
Set. Start.
This free online stopwatch counts upward from zero. Use it for a practice session, a presentation, a study task, or an everyday activity where you want to measure how long something takes.
How to use the online stopwatch
Choose Start to begin. The button becomes Pause while the stopwatch runs. Pause holds the reading; Resume continues the same run. Reset returns the reading to zero and clears recorded laps. The display shows hours, minutes, seconds, and hundredths throughout.
Record lap and split times
Choose Lap while the stopwatch is running. Lap time measures the interval since your previous lap, or since the start for the first one. Total is the cumulative split time since the start, excluding pauses. Taking a lap keeps the stopwatch running. The newest lap appears first.
Use your keyboard or a larger view
With the stopwatch or page focused, Space starts or pauses timing and L records a lap. Focused buttons also support their normal keyboard activation. Where the browser supports it, Fullscreen puts the stopwatch in a larger view. Escape returns to the page without resetting the time.
A reading
you can keep.
Copy your lap results
Choose Copy laps to copy the lap number, lap time, and total as comma-separated text. Paste it into a note or a spreadsheet. Copied rows run from the first lap to the latest one, even though the table displays the newest first. Copy before resetting or closing the tab if you want to keep the results.
How elapsed time is measured
The stopwatch measures the gap between browser clock readings instead of adding a fixed amount on each screen update. A delayed update therefore catches up to the elapsed time rather than losing ticks. The browser’s monotonic clock is independent of manual changes to your system’s date and time.
The screen refreshes while the tab is visible. Switching tabs does not pause the run, though the displayed reading may refresh later. Device sleep and browser suspension can behave differently across systems, so keep the device awake when measuring a continuous session. For the clock’s documented behavior, see MDN’s browser clock reference.
A stopwatch counts up
A stopwatch measures elapsed time. A countdown timer starts with a duration and approaches zero. This tool is a stopwatch: it has no end time, alarm, or countdown sound.
A moment
to explain.
Is this online stopwatch free?
Yes. Start, pause, resume, record laps, and copy your results without an account, payment, or app download.
What is the difference between lap time and split time?
Lap time is the interval between lap recordings. The Total column is the split time: cumulative elapsed time from the start. Both exclude time when the stopwatch is paused.
Will switching tabs stop the stopwatch?
No. Switching tabs does not pause it. The screen may stop updating in the background and catch up when you return. Keep the tab open; reloading or closing it clears the run.
Does it include time while my device sleeps?
That depends on the browser and operating system. The browser clock does not advance through device sleep consistently on every platform. Keep the device awake for a continuous measurement, or pause before letting it sleep.
Does showing hundredths guarantee that level of accuracy?
No. Hundredths describe the display resolution. Your reaction time, browser scheduling, and device clock also affect a manually recorded measurement. This is a convenient everyday stopwatch, not calibrated timing equipment.
Can I use it without an internet connection?
Once this page and its script have loaded, the timing controls run locally. Opening or reloading the page still needs a connection unless your browser already has a usable cached copy.
Are my timing results saved?
No. The run and lap list stay in page memory. Reset, reloading, or closing the tab clears them. Copy laps writes the results to your clipboard when you choose that action.
