Your phrase.
A few letters.
This free acronym generator takes the first letter or number from each word in a phrase. Use it to shorten a project name, an organization, a study topic, or a team name. The result changes as you type, and you can see exactly which words contributed each initial.
How to generate an acronym
Enter your phrase, then review the initials on the right. Skip common words leaves out words such as “and,” “of,” and “the.” Click any word below the input to include or exclude it yourself. Choose uppercase or lowercase, then select Copy acronym.
For “National Aeronautics and Space Administration,” skipping “and” gives NASA. Including every word gives NAASA. The All words line keeps the complete set of initials visible so you can compare your choice.
Keep the letters that matter
Small connecting words are sometimes useful in a name. The skip setting is a starting point, not a rule: click an excluded word to bring its initial back. Changing that setting reapplies the default selection; editing the phrase also starts a fresh selection for its new words.
Which common words does the setting skip?
a, an, and, as, at, by, for, from, in, of, on, or, the, to, with. The matching ignores capitalization. It uses this English list; it does not guess which words are important in other languages.

An acronym is usually pronounced as a word, like NASA. An initialism is read letter by letter, like SEO. This tool generates initials for either use. It does not guarantee that the result forms a pronounceable word.
How the phrase is split into words
Spaces, line breaks, punctuation, and hyphens separate words. Dotted letters such as U.S.A. are read as three words. An apostrophe inside a word stays with it, so “don’t” contributes D. A number contributes its first digit: “Team 2026” gives T2.
Accented initials are preserved. Other writing systems can contribute their first character, but this tool does not translate them or detect word boundaries inside writing without spaces. Emoji and standalone punctuation do not contribute initials.
Make a useful short name
Try changing your original phrase if the initials are hard to read or remember. For a public project or business name, check whether another organization already uses the abbreviation. Generating initials does not check trademarks, domain names, or name availability.

Is this acronym generator free?
Yes. Generating initials, selecting words, changing case, and copying are free, with no account or signup.
Can I make an acronym from a sentence?
Yes. Enter the sentence and choose the words whose initials you want to keep. The input allows up to 60 words and 2,000 characters. Punctuation separates words but does not contribute initials.
Can I include “and” or “the”?
Yes. Turn off Skip common words to include every word, or click an individual excluded word to include just that one.
Why does my abbreviation not form a word?
The generator uses the initials from your chosen words in their original order. Those letters do not always spell a pronounceable word. Try changing the phrase or the included words.
Can I turn an acronym back into a phrase?
This tool works from a phrase to its initials. It does not invent expansions for existing acronyms or look up what an abbreviation means.
Is my phrase sent to an AI service?
No. This generator uses local word and initial selection. Your phrase is not uploaded, sent to an AI service, or saved to website storage.
