How to convert
steps to miles

For a quick walking estimate, divide your number of steps by 2,000. That makes 10,000 steps about 5 miles. The calculator starts with this assumption so you can get an answer without knowing your height or measuring your walk.

Miles ≈ steps ÷ 2,000

A fixed ratio is a starting point. With the same step count, someone taking longer steps covers more ground. Select Use my step length if you know how much distance you cover in one step.

The formula with your own step length

Multiply your steps by the length of one step, then convert the distance to miles:

  • Step length in inches: miles = steps × inches ÷ 63,360.
  • Step length in centimetres: miles = steps × centimetres ÷ 160,934.4.

For example, 10,000 steps at 30 inches per step is approximately 4.73 miles, or 7.62 kilometres. It differs from the quick estimate because you changed the distance covered by each step.

How to measure your step length

Mark a starting point, walk 20 natural steps, and measure the distance travelled. Divide that distance by 20, using the same unit throughout. Repeat a few times at your usual pace and use the average. For example, 20 steps covering 600 inches gives a step length of 30 inches.

Count each foot landing as one step. A full stride, from one foot to that same foot again, contains two steps. Entering a full stride as your step length would roughly double the estimate.

Questions,
one step at a time.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

Using 2,000 steps per mile, 10,000 steps is about 5 miles (8.05 km). At a measured step length of 30 inches, it is about 4.73 miles. Neither ratio describes everyone’s walk; use your measured step length to personalise the result.

How many miles is 5,000 steps?

5,000 steps is approximately 2.5 miles (4.02 km) using the quick estimate. Divide 5,000 by 2,000, or enter a measured step length in the calculator.

How many miles is 20,000 steps?

At 2,000 steps per mile, 20,000 steps is about 10 miles (16.09 km). With shorter steps you cover less distance; with longer steps you cover more.

How many steps are in a mile?

This calculator’s quick estimate uses 2,000. For your own estimate, divide 63,360 by your step length in inches. A 30-inch step gives 2,112 steps per mile.

Can I use it for running?

Use a step length measured while running at the pace you want to calculate. The quick walking estimate does not adjust for running. A single average also cannot account for changes in pace throughout an outing.

Why does my watch show a different distance?

Your watch may use GPS, a different step length, or a different step count. This calculator only uses the numbers and method you choose. Check the step count and try a step length measured at the pace of that walk.

What the estimate is based on

The quick ratio matches the approximate steps-to-miles chart from Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Unit conversions use the international mile: 5,280 feet, or exactly 1,609.344 metres, as listed by NIST. Distances are rounded to two decimal places; small positive results below 0.01 are shown as “<0.01”.
