Calculator with remainder
A whole answer. A little left over.
Divide integers and see exactly how they fit.
Your division

17 = 5 × 3 + 2
The remainder is nonnegative and smaller than the absolute value of the divisor.

Division, with
the leftover shown.
Enter two whole numbers and select Calculate. The quotient tells you how many times the divisor fits; the remainder shows what is left. For example, 17 objects in groups of 5 make 3 complete groups with 2 objects left over.
Dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder
You can check any result by multiplying the divisor by the quotient, then adding the remainder. For 17 ÷ 5, that is 5 × 3 + 2 = 17. When the remainder is zero, the division is exact.
Negative numbers use a consistent rule
This calculator always gives a nonnegative remainder smaller than the divisor’s absolute value. Under this rule, −17 ÷ 5 gives quotient −4 and remainder 3, because 5 × (−4) + 3 = −17. Some programming languages use a signed remainder instead, so their output can differ.
Large integers stay exact
You can enter up to 100 digits per number, with an optional + or − sign. Calculations keep every digit instead of rounding large values. Enter numbers without commas, decimal points, or scientific notation.
Good questions.
Straight answers.
Why can’t I divide by zero?
No quotient and remainder can satisfy this division rule with a zero divisor. Choose any nonzero whole number.
Can I enter decimals?
This tool divides integers. It rejects decimal values such as 3.5 rather than silently rounding them.
What if the dividend is smaller than the divisor?
For nonnegative numbers, the quotient is zero and the remainder is the dividend. For example, 3 ÷ 5 gives quotient 0 and remainder 3.
What happens when division is exact?
The remainder is zero. For example, 20 ÷ 5 gives quotient 4 and remainder 0.
Are my numbers saved?
No. They are calculated in your browser without uploading them or saving them to website storage.
