Minutes per mile.
Meaning at a glance.

A mile pace calculator divides elapsed time by distance. If you cover 3 miles in 24 minutes, your pace is 8:00 per mile. That means each mile took eight minutes on average. A smaller pace time means faster movement; speed in miles per hour increases as pace time falls.

Calculate pace, time, or distance

Choose Pace when you know a distance and elapsed time. Choose Finish time when you know a distance and a target pace. Choose Distance when you know how long you moved and your pace. Miles and kilometers share the same page; results show both units.

Pace = time ÷ distance
Finish time = distance × pace
Distance = time ÷ pace
Speed in mph = 3600 ÷ seconds per mile

Pace notation is not a decimal

8:30 means eight minutes and thirty seconds, or 510 seconds. It is not 8.30 decimal minutes. Enter 8 in Minutes and 30 in Seconds. Likewise, 1:45:00 means one hour and forty-five minutes of elapsed time.

Convert mile pace to kilometer pace

One international mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometers, using the NIST mile conversion. Divide seconds per mile by 1.609344 to obtain seconds per kilometer. An 8:00 mile is approximately 4:58 per kilometer when rounded to the nearest second.

A target pace.
A possible finish.

Example: a five-mile run at 9:30 pace

Nine minutes and thirty seconds is 570 seconds per mile. Multiply by 5 miles: 2,850 seconds, which is 47:30. This is the finish time if that average pace holds for the whole distance.

Race estimates assume constant average pace

The finish-time table applies your calculated pace to 1 mile, 5K, 10K, a half marathon, and a marathon. A half marathon uses 21.0975 km; a marathon uses 42.195 km. It does not predict changes from fatigue, terrain, weather, or the difference between shorter and longer events.

Use the time you mean

Total elapsed time includes stops. Moving time excludes them. Either can be useful, but they produce different average paces. Enter the time that matches your comparison and be consistent. The calculator adds no rest breaks of its own.

Input limits

Distance inputs range from 0.001 to 10,000 in the selected unit. Elapsed time accepts 0–999 whole hours, minutes from 0–59, and seconds below 60 with up to three decimal places; the total must be positive. Entered pace must be positive and no greater than 180:00 per unit. Other numeric outputs show up to 10 significant digits. Invalid inputs clear the result instead of retaining an old answer.

A few details
before you set off.

How do I calculate my mile pace?

Divide your total time by your distance in miles. For example, 30 minutes over 3 miles is 10 minutes per mile. Select Pace, choose Miles, and enter your distance and elapsed time.

Does this work for walking as well as running?

Yes. The arithmetic is the same for any positive distance and time. Your result is an average over that distance, not a fitness rating or a suggested training pace.

How can I calculate a finish time?

Choose Finish time, enter a distance, and enter minutes and seconds per mile or kilometer. The result multiplies distance by your pace, with no added stops.

What does 8:00 per mile mean in km pace?

It is about 4:58 per kilometer. Dividing 480 seconds by 1.609344 gives approximately 298.26 seconds per kilometer.

What happens when I switch miles and kilometers?

The unit selection changes how entered distance and pace are interpreted; it keeps the numbers already in the fields. Check them after changing units. Results always include equivalent mile and kilometer readings.

Why can a marathon estimate be unrealistic?

It assumes you maintain the same average pace for the entire distance. A short, fast run does not establish that you can keep its pace over 42.195 km. Treat the table as arithmetic for a chosen pace, not a performance prediction.

Is the mile pace calculator free?

Yes. Pace, time, distance, race estimates, and copying are free, with no account. Your entered values stay in the browser.
